Wedges offer another example of a force distance tradeoff. Unfortunately, their use is limited because of the friction they usually create.
Activity:
Try the wedge sample provided by your teacher. Explain the force-distance trade-off involved.
The Essence of The Wedge:
A forward force produces a sideways force.
Push down on the axe, and the wood splits sideways.
Push forward on the door wedge, and the door gets squeezed upwards.
MA = (Forward Length) / (Sideways Length)
